Description

Raeburn Van Buren The Saturday Evening Post Illustration Original Art (Curtis Publ., 1920s). Before Abby an' Slats (1937-71) made him a comic-strip celebrity, Van Buren ruled The Saturday Evening Post as a chronically popular illustrator. Like the frontier artist Charles M. Russell before him, Van Buren was primarily a cartoonist-storyteller who took a painterly approach even when working with pencil and quill. The present selection, though disassociated from its motivating story (title undocumented), radiates suspense: Something is about to happen. Van Buren's arsenal here ranges from a round-point No. 2 pencil and a broad-stroke carpenter's pencil to a deep-black graphite stylus. Textured illustration board with an image area of 15" x 13.5", matted to 21.5" x 19.75". Pronounced age-toning and natural smudging. Otherwise in Very Good condition.
