Description

Ponchie Meiji Period Comic Book (c. 1880s). An astonishing precursor to the explosive artistic medium known as manga, this early Japanese comic book is an incredibly rare find. Between 1905 and 1928, manga emerged as a separate artistic medium in Japan in reaction to ponchie, a populist hybrid art form that flourished in the early and mid-Meiji period. Ponchie, possibly inspired by the English satire magazine Punch, was a movement of political cartoons in response to the Meiji Restoration. This period, referred to at the time as the Honorable Restoration, is an era of Japanese history which extended from 1868 to 1912, and it marks the industrialization of Japan and its adoption of Western ideas and production methods. This amazing comic from that era measures 4.5" x 7" and consists of 12 double-sided pages including the cover. The book is bound together using thread and exhibits age-related toning and edge wear with small folds in one corner. Some tape on the spine, and the condition of this rare vintage manga forerunner is Good.
