Bambi Mother Deer and Bambi Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1942). "Hush now, we're almost there." Bambi and his mother traverse the forest in poignant original concept/color key painting for Disney's 1942 classic attributed to Disney Legend Tyrus Wong (1910 - 2016). On Wong's contributions to Bambi fellow Disney Legends Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston remarked, "He set the color schemes along with the appearance of the forest in painting after painting. Paintings that captured the poetic feeling that had eluded us [artists] for so long. Ty Wong not only inspired the other visual artists, but he created a standard that was met by musicians and special effects too." Similar moments evocative of this concept can be spotted flanking the iconic meadow scene, first beginning near the 19:54 timestamp as mother and child make their way there through the forest and later beginning near the 31:54 timestamp after narrowly dodging their first encounter with a hunter's gunshots. Color keys like this are effectively miniature paintings used to explore and establish color palette and theme for a particular scene; here bright white highlights are contrasted with subtly perilous tones of the forest that seem to foreshadow the coming loss. The artwork has been hand-painted in gouache on illustration board and has been framed under glass to an overall size of 9" x 7.25" with a mat aperture of 5" x 3.5". All frames are sold as-is. With typical handling and edge wear, overall this incredible concept/color key is in Very Good condition.
