Star Trek: The Animated Series Ship and Crew Production Cel Setup Group of 5 (Filmation, 1973-74). When the original Star Trek series ended in 1969 after three seasons, only a few ardent fans spoke out. Then the show went into syndicated reruns, and suddenly there were "Trekkies" everywhere, demanding new episodes of this Gene Roddenberry classic. It took some time, but eventually, Filmation came out with the next best thing: an animated series featuring most of the original cast reprising their roles as voice actors. Here are five great hand-painted 12 field cels or cel setups from that two-season Saturday morning cartoon. The first is a sweet image of the USS Enterprise charging straight ahead, on a print background of a planet and moon. Image size is approximately 8" x 4.25". Next is a superb 4-cel setup from the ship's bridge, featuring Lieutenant Arex, Science Officer Spock, Captain James T. Kirk, Helmsman Hikaru Sulu, and Communications Officer Nyota Uhura. This setup is placed over a scene-matched print background. A 4-cel setup from the final episode "The Counter-Clock Incident" features visiting Commodore Robert April at the helm with a younger version of Spock as the third item in this group; figure sizes are 5.25" and 4". It's also placed over a scene-matched print background of the bridge. Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott and Sulu are in the next piece, a 2-cel setup from the episode "Albatross," with figure sizes of 7.5" and 4." The final 2-cel setup features Spock (from the episode "The Practical Joker") and a blue-faced Kirk (from "Albatross), with figure sizes of 7.25" and 3.25"; both this setup and the one before are placed on prints made from a custom recreation painting of a stock image from the series.
