Eyvind Earle - Sleeping Beauty Prince Phillip, Samson, and Maleficent as a Dragon 22" x 9.5" Signed Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1959). "Now shall you deal with me, O Prince. And all the powers of hell!" The climactic fight between the gallant Prince Phillip and the wicked Maleficent is featured in this staggering 22" x 9.5" Sleeping Beauty concept painting by the hand of Disney Legend Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000). In the epic final scenes, Phillip is met with the ultimate test, as Maleficent surrounds the castle with thorns and transforms herself into a colossal dragon, resolved to stop his valiant attempt to rescue the cursed princess. Eyvind Earle's depiction of the scene is simply astonishing. This gouache painting conveys the bravery of Prince Phillip riding Samson, brandishing the Sword of Truth, and confronting Maleficent as she breathes her otherworldly green flames. Eyvind Earle's mastery of light and shadow is on display here, framing the image in dark, jagged surroundings highlighted by the bright, central action. This evocative image, signed by the artist in the bottom right corner, is exemplary of Earle's use of intense color and bold forms, accomplishing this intricate image with a modest amount of brushstrokes enhanced by his signature approach to texture. The painting was essential in guiding the production team to create the scene taking place at the 1:09:24 mark if the film. An unforgettable scene!
