Yogi Bear Christmas Specialty Signed Original Art Given to Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera (Hanna-Barbera, 1959). "Hey, hey, hey!" Yogi helps the H-B gang celebrate the holiday with this incredible specialty piece of artwork given to studio heads Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera. The year 1959 was a big year, not only for Yogi Bear (who was the breakout star in H-B's second television series The Huckleberry Hound Show), but for the Hanna-Barbera Studios in general. After years of toiling at MGM on Tom & Jerry theatrical shorts, Bill and Joe suddenly found themselves out of work when in 1957, MGM had decided to close their animation studio in favor of reissuing their extensive backlog of cartoons. With help from Columbia Pictures and Screen Gems, the pair was able to set up their own shop in 1958. They made the radical decision to concentrate on limited-animation programs for television, something that had not been done before this time. Their first effort, The Ruff and Reddy Show, premiered in 1958 on NBC, and was successful enough to start up a second show, starring Huckleberry Hound, Pixie & Dixie with Mr. Jinks, and Yogi Bear in 1958. This was the show that rocketed the studio to fame, mainly due to the popularity of Yogi (who would get his own series in 1960).
In celebration of the company's new star Yogi, the H-B staff whipped up this cool portrait of Yogi as a Christmas Tree top decoration. The art was painted with ink and gouache on a 12" x 16" sheet of illustration board, and the entire staff signed their names in green ink. The signatures include some very notable names in animation: Mike Maltese, Warren Foster, Dick Bickenbach (signing as "Bick"), Ken Muse, Robert Gentle, Alex Lovy, Dick Lundy, Bob Carr, Don Patterson, Dan Gordon, Art Lozzi, Richard H. (Dick) Thomas, and many others. This is a wonderful bit of Hanna-Barbera animation history from the earliest-known animator-signed presentation art from the studio known to exist; it originally came from the Bill Hanna estate. The art is in a mat with green "sponge" painting (a technique that would come in handy for The Flintstones), with an opening of 10.5" x 13.75", and an overall mat size of 13.75" x 17.5". In Very Good condition with minor handling wear.
