Description
Mary Blair - Alice in Wonderland Alice and Dinah 8.5" x 8" Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). "Nonsense? That's it, Dinah! If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense." Alice lounges against the tree as Dinah comes to join her in this utterly adorable original concept/color key painting by the deft hand of Disney Legend Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) created for Disney's 1951 classic Alice in Wonderland. Color keys like this are effectively miniature paintings used to explore and establish color palette and theme for a particular scene; contrasting with the whimsical, bolder hues seen in her concepts for Wonderland, here Blair employs bright but naturalistic colors to set the tone. This piece is similar to the film's opening scenes beginning near the 2:13 timestamp where Alice can be spotted reclining against the crook of the tree's limbs with Dinah sitting nearby, quite uninterested in her sister's verbose history lesson. With bright blue eyes to match her iconic dress, she sits nicely center frame, hand-painted in gouache to a full image area of 8.5" x 8" on illustration board measuring 9.75" x 9.25" overall which has been sealed with a clear varnish. A similar, more detailed concept by Blair can be found on page 39 of Pierre Lambert's 2020 French-language book Alice Au Pays Des Merveilles, prints included for reference. With typical handling and edge wear including corner pinholes and faint surface wear, overall this prelude to a wonderful land of nonsense is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
