Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust Carmilla's Castle of Chaythe Production Cel with Key Master Background (Madhouse, 2000). "Fly. Come on. Fly!" the bounty hunter Leila urges the starship bearing the vampire Meier Link and his beloved Charlotte to the stars. The starship emerges from the recesses of the evil Carmilla's decadent Castle of Chaythe at the 1:32:31 mark of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's animated masterpiece Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, seen here in this jaw-dropping original production cel setup. This elaborate piece is composed of two cels on their original Key Master production background rendered masterfully in gouache on background board. Backgrounds of the film are attributed to art director Yuji Ikehata, with a long list of acclaimed background artists including Katsushi Aoki, Masayoshi Banno, Yoshikazu Fukutome, Sayaka Hirahara, Hisashi Ikeda, Ryouko Ina, Kaoru Inoda, Naomi Kasugai, Rio Kono, Kyouko Naganawa, Masako Nagata, Hiroaki Sasaki, Rumiko Shindou, Shinichi Uehara, Noboru Yoshida, Kiyomi Ota, and the great Kazuo Oga of Studio Ghibli fame. Measuring 14" x 10", this stunning piece exemplifies the exquisitely detailed backgrounds seen throughout the film. A piece that must be seen to be believed, this gorgeous setup shows minor handling and edge wear from normal studio use with light taping and staples at the edges.
