Neon Genesis Evangelion "Angel Attack" Rei Production Cel (Gainax, c. 1995-96). "Rei." "Yes?" "The backup isn't working out. I need you again." "Yes, sir." When Shinji Ikari refuses to pilot Eva Unit 01, paramedics wheel out an injured Rei Ayanami, leading Shinji to make the fateful decision to finally get in the robot. Presented is a magnificent hand-painted original production cel from the very first episode of Hideaki Anno's game-changing Neon Genesis Evangelion. This catalytic moment marks the beginning of the epic sci-fi tale that would change the anime industry forever. An incredibly rare find, this is the very first shot seen of the physical Rei Ayanami (she mysteriously appears before Shinji, unbandaged, earlier in the episode)! The image nearly fills the 12 field cel, and it is numbered A1 in the upper right corner, the only cel created for the shot. The cel can be seen at the 17:10 mark of the episode, titled "Angel Attack." Minor handling and edge wear, and the pegholes are attached with tape. The condition of this rare, must-have cel is Very Good.
