Description
Gustaf Tenggren Among Gnomes and Trolls "He Spun and Spun" Signed Original Illustration (1920). Collectors are in for a treat with this outstanding early original illustration by renowned Disney and storybook artist Gustaf Tenggren (1896 - 1970). Tenggren was born in Sweden in 1896 and studied at an art school in Bothenburg, influenced by Swedish fairytales and folklore. This led him to illustrating for the popular annual Swedish anthology magazine Among Gnomes and Trolls / Bland Tomtar och Troll. The anthology began in 1907 with the legendary illustrator John Bauer creating the artwork. Tenggren began illustrating for the anthology in 1917 and after Bauer's untimely death in a shipwreck in November of 1918, Tenggren took over as the primary illustrator. The gorgeous illustration in this lot is titled "He Spun and Spun" and was created over 100 years ago for the 13th volume of the anthology released in 1920, as noted on the reverse of the frame in Swedish. Full of magic and a truly fairy tale quality only Tenggren could evoke, the illustration is believed to be a part of a Rumpelstiltskin story as he spins straw to gold for the young woman next to him. This is, of course, for the price of her firstborn child. It's easy to see how Tenggren would find a place for himself at Disney as the studio began adapting classic fairy tales and how his style influenced the atmosphere of productions like The Old Mill and Pinocchio, though he would return to illustrating for Golden Books in 1939. Measuring 7.5'' x 8.5'' and signed by the artist in the lower left, the work is presented in a 17'' x 16'' frame without glass. A rare look at Tenggren's early work before moving to the US, the lot has remained magical for over a hundred years and will continue to enchant its viewers for another hundred. In Good to Very Good condition with light toning and wear from age and faint handling wear.Auction Info
