Walt Disney's Surprise Package Captain Hook's Ship, The Jolly Roger from Peter Pan Storybook Illustration Original Art (Walt Disney/Simon & Shuster, 1944). This oversized illustrated storybook previewed a number of animated projects that were at the time making their way through the Disney Studios, including Peter Pan, which would not be released for nine more years (in 1953). From this books adaptation of Peter Pan comes this original illustration of the pirate ship the Jolly Roger, as manned in the story (and film) by nefarious Captain Hook and his crew; it can be found in the book on page 73. In addition to "Peter Pan and the Pirates," this Surprise Package giant Golden Book also previewed several others, including the 1946 feature Song of the South ("Brer Rabbit en his Satchel uv Gold") 1955's Lady and the Tramp ("Lady," with no Tramp), and from the 1947 package feature Fun and Fancy Free, "Mickey and the Beanstalk" ("Happy Valley"). This "first pass" image of the Jolly Roger is drawn entirely in heavy graphite on paper affixed to a thin backing board. The art is in a small stiff-paper mat with an approximate aperture size of 3.75" x 3.25" and overall mat size of 5.5" x 6.5". The mat has "Same Size B&W Surprise Package" handwritten in ink below the image, leading us to think this is how the art was delivered to the printer. Color photocopies of the book's cover (with a dark-haired pixie that closely resembles Tinker Bell, right down to her pouty expression), the Title Page, and page 73, with the ship illustration in the upper left. These are included for comparison. This 1944 ship illustration by an unnamed Disney Studios artist, with its pirate flag visible in the ship's stern, is a remarkable little "pre-release" image from a favorite 1953 film; the art is in Good to Very Good condition with minor yellowing along the edges, no doubt from using rubber cement to affix it to the backing board.Auction Info
