Description
Disneyland on the Air Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck Little Golden Book Interior Illustrations by Samuel Armstrong Original Art Group of 23 plus #D43 Published Book (Walt Disney/Golden Press, 1955). "Tonight - TV - Disneyland on the air!" This children's storybook was one of many products produced to publicize the opening of Disneyland during the summer of 1955. The book was lavishly illustrated by Samuel Armstrong (1893 - 1977), an artist/animator who worked on such Disney classics as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi during his six years at the studio. Sam later worked briefly at Warner Brothers before switching to illustrating books like this. The story has Mickey and Donald along with Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and the nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie in the world of real people, coming to the opening of Disneyland to star in a television special. There are 23 page images in this group, all painted in gouache on illustration boards; the pages include 2 (approximate image size 9" x 8"), 3 (9.5" x 8.5"), 4 (9.5" x 9"), 5 (9.25" x 8"), 6 ( 9.75" x 9"), 7 (9.5" x 8"), 8 (9.75" x 8.5"), 9 (9.5" x 8"), 10 (9.5" x 7.25"), 11 (9.5" x 7.5"), 12 (9.5" x 9"), 13 (9.5" x 8.5"), 15 (8" x 6.5"), 16 (9" x 8"), 20 (with Pluto, 8.5" x 8"), 21 (the Three Little Pigs, 8.75" x 7.25"), 22 (9.5" x 8"), 24 (8.5" x 8"), 25 (9.25" x 8.5"), 26 (9.5" x 8.5"), 27 (9.5" x 9"), and 28 (8" x 8"). The paintings are on boards with an average size of 9.5" x 12" and are housed in a black portfolio measuring 12.75" x 14.75" x 1.75". None of the boards included text blocks, although a few light stains were left. A published copy of the #D42 Little Golden Book is also included. The overall condition of the art is Very Good with minor handling and light soiling away from the images.More information about Walt Disney Studios - Fab Five.
