Presented is an astonishing hand-inked and hand-painted original production cel featuring the one and only Astro Boy from the opening title sequence of the groundbreaking classic Astro Boy anime series. Created by the Godfather of Manga, Osamu Tezuka (1928 - 1989), Astro Boy is the posterchild of the globally popular aesthetic known as anime, considered the first character to embody the design and ethos of the massive artistic movement. Astro Boy (known in Japan as Tetsuwan Atom) paved the way for countless anime titles after it, considered by many animation historians to be one of the most culturally significant cartoons in the history of animation. Accordingly, this animation cel from the iconic original 1963 opening title sequence is an exceedingly rare artifact. Cels from anime openings are sought-after enough as it is, but this features a picture-perfect, full-figure pose of the monumental Astro Boy from one of the most important anime series of all time! Original black-and-white Astro Boy cels hardly ever come to market, let alone from the series' opening title sequence. This rare artifact will be a Crown Jewel for any animation art collection. Seen six seconds into the opening titles, the piece is composed of two 12 field cels, displayed over a printed background for presentation purposes. Well preserved for their age, the cels show minor studio handling and edge wear with some cel wrinkling and little to no vinegar odor. The cels bear the hand-written notation A-77-1, OP1, and A1 (possibly A10, due to some ink abrasion in the upper right corner). The condition of this magnificent piece is Very Good.
