Description

Back to Neverland Jolly Roger and Skull Rock Background Layout Drawing (Walt Disney, 1989). "Walter... All that mood stuff really works, Walter. This is really creepy..." Robin Williams finds himself in a foreboding animated scene in the live-action/animated short film Back to Neverland. This film, hosted by Robin Williams and Walter Cronkite, was created to educate tourists about the process of traditional animation, screened at the animation building of Disney/MGM Studios. The creation of the 1989 film used archival artwork from 1953's Peter Pan as a guide, and this rare original preliminary background layout drawing closely resembles the design of the classic film. The image can be seen at the 6:06 mark of the film, as seen on YouTube. An absolutely stunning piece, this drawing is rendered in mixed media on 13" x 9.25" sketch paper. It bears production notes for Sequence 8, Scene 3, including sky effects notes that are ultimately reflected in the film. The notes include "best to talk to Jerry before painting," referring to director Jerry Rees. Simply jaw-dropping, this atmospheric production drawing shows minor handling and edge wear, and the condition is Very Good.
