Description
The Black Hole "Sketch of Hell" Preliminary Matte Visual Study - Original Art by Peter Ellenshaw (Walt Disney, 1979). Here's a fiery over-sized preliminary painting of Hell from the Disney film The Black Hole. This is a preliminary concept for a matte visual by Disney's veteran matte artist Peter Ellenshaw (1913 - 2007). A matte painting is an image, rendered using digital or traditional painting techniques, to create a representation of a scene that would be impossible for filmmakers to deliver in real life. This might be because the landscape does not exist in the real world, it's not financially practical to travel to a location, or to extend the set outside of its filmed parameters. The use of matte paintings was a standard film technique throughout the 20th century appearing in more and more major films before digital VFX came onto the scene and became the new standard. Peter Ellenshaw was a master at the art of matte painting for films. He painted matte visuals for Treasure Island (1950), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Old Yeller (1957), and Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959) to name just a few of his impressive film credits. This amazing preliminary illustration can be seen in Peter Ellenshaw's book, "Selected Works" as figure 18. "Sketch of Hell". Ellenshaw has received numerous awards from many prestigious institutions. Among them the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the American Film Institute in Chicago, four Academy Award® nominations, taking home the OSCAR® for his visual effects on Mary Poppins (1964). In 1993 Ellenshaw was inducted into Disney's hall of fame program as an official Disney Legend. In 2017 Peter Ellenshaw was posthumously inducted in the Visual Effects Society's hall of fame. He also has the distinction of having his name appear in a window on Main Street in Disneyland an honor bestowed upon only a few who help create the magic. This amazing piece was rendered in acrylic on 42.5" x 18" board. The artwork is signed in paint by the artist in the bottom left. Framed to 48" x 24". Frame sold as-is. This amazing piece of production used artwork presents in Very Good condition. A real treasure for one lucky collector! From the Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw Family Archive.
