Description
The Friendly Ghost FIRST CASPER CARTOON Casper with Bonnie and Johnny Production Cel Setup with Master Background Painting (Famous Studios, 1945). Here's something with a huge WOW factor! From the very first cartoon to feature Casper comes this great and extremely RARE setup, a trimmed, hand-inked and hand-painted four-level production cel scene featuring lonely ghost Casper with his new friends, two young children named Johnny and Bonnie who are (gasp) not afraid of this non-frightening and playful spirit! The setup includes an original background painting by Lloyd Hallock Jr. (who did "scenics" with Shane Miller on this short); it's the long view of a wall where the children play with a ball, one that Casper has a hard time catching as it continually passes right though him. It can be first seen in the cartoon at the 7:18 timestamp. Bonnie and Johnny play jump rope with Casper as they walk along, with this pose of all three appearing at the 7:38 mark. Izzy Sparber was the director on this cartoon that was based on a comic book story by Joe Oriolo and Seymour Reit; Felix the Cat artist Otto Messmer was one of the writers. This Noveltoon cartoon was meant to only be a one-time appearance of Casper, but the character proved popular enough for Famous Studios to feature him in his own series, after a slight redesign giving our favorite cartoon ghost a slimmer look. Casper would go on to appear in 55 theatrical shorts plus several animated television series and even feature films. It all started here, folks! Who said ghosts are scary? The setup is matted with an opening of 10" x 7.25"; mat size is 12" x 9.25". It's in Very Good condition with handling wear and trimmed edges.More information about Famous Studios Artist.
