Bambi Adult Head Animator's Maquette (Walt Disney, 1942). During the production of Walt Disney feature film Bambi, animators were tasked with creating and animating realistic animals that would still fit the style of Disney animation, as well as be able to emote effectively. They achieved this goal with great success, and Bambi remains one of the most beloved classic Disney films of all time. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, and it has been preserved in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for its contributions to animation. This wonderful maquette was actually used in the production of this groundbreaking film. The maquette depicts the head of the adult Bambi, complete with his antlers. The maquette, numbered #3 on its base, served as a reference to animators, allowing them to see Bambi from all sides when drawing him. The piece is cast in plaster and mounted on a wooden base. It measures about 9.75" tall, with a base width of about 6". This incredibly rare piece is signed on its base by Helen Nerbovig McIntosh. McIntosh worked in Ink and Paint at Disney in its early days, and she painted maquettes during the time this maquette would have been made. The piece is in Good condition, with some handling and wear. Some of the tips of the antlers have broken off, and there are some areas where the wire armature is exposed on the antlers. There are also some areas of cracking on the antlers.
