Description
Fantasia "Dance of the Hours" Hyacinth Hippo Animator's Maquette (Walt Disney, 1940). Hyacinth Hippo is one of the stars of the "Dance of the Hours" sequence in Fantasia. This incredibly rare animators' maquette depicts the dancing hippo in wonderful three-dimensional detail. Animators' maquettes are created to help artists visualize characters from all angles so that their drawings are more accurate and on-model. Maquettes today are cast in polyurethane, but during the production of 1940 feature film Fantasia, plaster was used to cast the maquettes. Very few original animators' maquettes exist, and they are highly desirable because of their importance and rarity. This piece was repainted after the film was produced by Helen Nerbovig McIntosh (who has signed her name on the bottom of the maquette). McIntosh worked in the Disney Ink & Paint department as early as the creation of Snow White, and she was a major part of the founding of the Disney Courvoisier program. She also painted maquettes in Joe Grant's Character Model Department around the same time this maquette would have been produced. The maquette is marked #10 on its base, and it also bears a stamp instructing it to be returned to the Disney Character Model Department. An extremely similar dancing Hyacinth Hippo maquette can be seen on a shelf in the Disney Character Model Department at about the 27:31 mark of the 1941 Disney film The Reluctant Dragon, with even the paint job looking the same. The piece measures about 7.75" tall. It is in Good to Very Good condition, with some handling and edge wear, including a few very small chips and some paint wear.From the Disney Character Model Maquette Glad Collection.
