Mickey's Mellerdrammer Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow Original Model Sheet Drawing (Walt Disney, 1933). Presented in this lot is an incredibly rare original model sheet of Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow from the Wilfred Jackson-directed short Mickey's Mellerdrammer. They appear in the roles of Simon Legree and Eliza in Mickey and Minnie's very own production of the 1852 anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. "Tom Shows" were popular from the 1850s into the 1900s due to the lacking copyright laws at the time, though as film grew as a form of entertainment these shows were performed less and less. Disney had his characters put on their own version that premiered in theaters on 3/18/1933, a reflection of the cultural norms of the period and a continuously controversial short due to its insensitive stereotyping. The graphite model sheet would have helped to keep the characters consistent regardless of the scene with three full figure poses and two poses of Eliza's doll. Model sheets are already highly collectible as they were created only in small quantities for studio use, but this one is one of a kind! The characters have an approximate image area of about 11.5'' x 8.75'' on 12 field paper in a 18'' x 14.5'' mat. Mat sold as-is. Good condition overall with areas of white paint corrections, light age-related toning, and faint smudging, edge, and handling wear.Auction Info
