Description

Superman (Serial) Superman in Flight Production Cel (Columbia, 1948). "Look, up in the sky...." The first live-action film to feature the Man of Steel was this 15-part "cliffhanger" serial starring Kirk Alyn as Superman and Noel Neill as Lois Lane (predating her portrayal of Lois on the Adventures of Superman television series, 1953-58). In the days before television, multi-part serials like this kept theater patrons coming back week after week to catch the latest chapter. Although this was a live-action film series, the images of Superman flying were created though animation, and this small but easily-recognizable black-and-white hand-inked, hand-painted cel of Superman flying over metropolis was created for the film (a mock-up lobby card print is used as a background, added for presentation purposes). It's been said that the animation for these scenes was created for the serial by the Walt Disney Studios; Columbia had their own animation studio active from 1934-46, but had turned over production of their theatrical cartoons to UPA by this time, so this might be true. The figure size measures approximately .75", while the "lobby card" background is 14" x 11". In Very Good condition with minor handling wear.
