Description

William E. Hill Among Us Mortals-related Original Drawings Group of 24 (New York Tribune and Other Newspapers, 1920s). Hill's blending of caricature with photo-realism anticipates the modern-day portraiture of Drew Friedman. Hill's manifold faces are recognizably ordinary people, rendered remarkable because they transcend mundane reality. This generous array dates from the same period in which Hill was producing his famous Sunday comics page, Among Us Mortals, but they employ a markedly different technique -- a textured-charcoal medium with painted highlights and backdrops, unlike the ink-dot pointillism of Mortals. All appear to have originated as newspaper spot-illustrations, although no publishing pedigree is documented aside from tantalizing handwritten notes on the reverse. Charcoal and white-watercolor retouching on textured stock. They have all been affixed to various styles of illustration and chit boards. Board sizes range from 6.5" x 7.75" to 10.5" x 11.5". Conspicuous age-toning, with scattered peeling/scuffing, and the edges are brittle and flaking. Some have stains and discolorations. In Good condition.
