Description

Fred Thomas Long Shots Daily Comic Strip Original Art, Group of 10 (Hall Syndicate, 1962-63). Like such contemporaries as Charles Schulz (Peanuts) and Mort Walker (Beetle Bailey), Thomas makes gag cartooning look easy -- but that shared simplified style is anything but simple. The trick lies in knowing what details to leave out. In Long Shots (1962-67), Thomas delivers a streamlined, consistently funny, running commentary on the sporting world, from inept coaches to sore losers and beyond. The really astonishing quality here is that Thomas is working without the safety net of pencil sketching: The ink seems to know precisely where to go to form a compelling composition. The strips are dated 12-12-62, 1-10-63, 1-25-63, 2-6-63, 2-28-63, 3-11-63, 3-14-63, 3-22-63, 4-20-63, and 5-10-63. Ink and painted white retouching on Bristol board. Image area, 18" x 5.25". Moderate toning. Excellent condition.
