Description

Gus Mager Oily John the Detective Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (Hearst Newspapers, 1905). Oily John accounted for just a fraction of Mager's brilliant and influential career, running during September-October of 1905. The artist had larger projects ahead, including the famous Hawkshaw the Detective strip and the satirical Main Street. This splendid, large-scale example (undated as to day and month) finds Oily John foiling a safecracker. Editorial notes in margins include Mager's notes to himself. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Overall age toning, brittleness, and marginal nicks, scuffing, and tears. Image area, 11.5" x 17". Good condition.
