Description

Roy Crane Wash Tubbs Daily Comic Strip Fragment Original Art dated 5-10-33 (NEA Service, Inc,, 1933). A two-thirds surviving section preserves one of Crane's finer nautical scenes, from one of the most famous story-arcs in comics history -- the tale of a crew at the mercy of a formidable villain named Slugg, inspired by Jack London's 1904 novel The Sea Wolf. Here, a whaling vessel happens upon a school of porpoises. Leading man Washington Tubbs mistakes an island for a surfacing whale. Still brilliant though missing its right-hand panel, the composition is marred further by long-ago moisture staining and barked edges. (The full-length novelistic story can be found in Bill Blackbeard's The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics [Abrams Artbooks, 1977], and in the all-Crane Hurricane Isle volume [Fantagraphics Books, 2015].) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 18.5" x 5.5". Good condition.
