Description

Al Kilgore - Quisp and Quake Cereal Premium Original Art and Production Materials Group of 40 (Quaker, 1965). In the early 1960s the Jay Ward studio was asked to design several mascots for breakfast cereals. In addition to creating Cap'n Crunch, Ward and his partner Bill Scott came up with a pair of mascots named Quake and Quisp. Theirs was a cereal-based rivalry for the hearts and minds of children everywhere, in that they were frequently advertised together. Al Kilgore, already working on the Bullwinkle comic strip, also developed a series of comic strip booklets that were inserted into the boxes as premiums. The original art included in this large collection of material is: one complete inked comic strip (17" x 5.5" image area on Bristol board), two back cover comic strip graphite prelims (15.5" x 12.5" on onionskin paper); and a graphite comic strip prelim (16.75" x 5.25" on onionskin paper). Also included are some rough layouts, scripts, a pile of stats (of finished strips), and a printed box (folded flat) of each cereal. The cartoon on the back of the Quake box matches one of the prelims included in this group. These all came from Al Kilgore's files. The onionskin tracing papers are toned and folded. Most stats have wear and handling and some have folds. Overall condition of this lot is Very Good.
