Description
Famous Artists Course Parody Original Art in Ring Binder and 2 Volumes of the Real Course Group of 3 (Famous Artists Schools, c. 1950s). Edwin Eberman (1905-88), whose name is stamped on the cover, remains better known as a gallery painter and art director for such high-end magazines as McCall's and Look. This 30-page array of sculptural collages and original cartoon drawings comes as rather a surprise: It is a parody of a training manual for Famous Artists Schools, which Eberman had co-founded in 1948 at Wilton, CT. This was presented to him as a New Year's gift, and was created by his staff. Instead of such real-life Famous Artists teachers as Norman Rockwell and Albert Dorne, Eberman's unique book lists such imaginary faculty members as "Hardly Magoo," "Vic Loafing," and "Joe Stogie." (Puns on the names of actual staff members such as Hailey Magee Mac, Vic Lofink, Joe Brody, Tad Bowen, and others, who all signed on the last page of the book) Ink, watercolors, shading film, and collage effects on coated page-stock, with printed text pages. Dimensions, 12" x 14.5". Barked corners on binder. Some smaller pasted-in elements have fallen away, leaving adhesive residue. Very Good condition. Also included are two other binders that include actual Famous Artists Cartoon Course lessons #11-24. These binders are stamped with the name "Frank Willard" on the front covers. Frank Willard was the creator of the long-running comic strip Moon Mullins in 1923. They are in Excellent condition.Auction Info
