Description

Little Black Sambo Book Illustration and File Copy Story Books #1503 Group of 10 (Samuel Lowe Company, c. 1950s).
The story of Sambo, the little boy who turns a spinning tiger into butter for his pancakes, was a popular fairy tale throughout the 20th Century. Today, the book is considered Politically Incorrect, but items like this shine a light on a different time, an era when Sambo was an innocent story for young children. Included in this lot is an original hand-painted, stylized illustration of Sambo ready to dig into his huge stack of pancakes; this artwork is painted in gouache on illustration board, with an overall image area measuring approximately 5" x 6". There is a staple in the 8" x 10" artboard, well away from the image. The books are from a different edition, one that is placed in India instead of Africa; these are paper cover books measuring 6.5" x 8" and 20 pages, illustrated throughout in color. Art is in Very Good condition; book condition averages Fine.
