Description
Clyde Lewis Herky Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-16-39 (NEA Service, Inc., 1939) Better known for his Army-life strip Pvt. Buck (1941-46), Lewis also excelled at the Anomalous Child school of cartooning, in which preadolescent characters exhibit adult-like independent attitudes and mannerisms. (Others of this nature would include Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy and Charles Schulz's Peanuts.) The present large-scale selection features a little kid who fancies himself "a playboy ... black sheep of our family!" Smartly composed, with rubbery figures like animated balloons. Inscribed to a schoolboy fan, Jack Kent, who would grow up to become the creator of the classic fantasy-satire strip King Aroo. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 25" x 16.5". Moderate toning and handling wear. Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.Auction Info
