Description

Fantasia Peter Pegasus Multiplane 3-D Courvoisier Setup (Walt Disney, 1940). Peter Pegasus (also known as Baby Pegasus or Young Pegasus) is one of the main protagonists in "The Pastoral Symphony" segment of the 1940 Disney film Fantasia. Walt's original plan was that this film would be treated as a work in progress and some new segments would replace old ones with every re-release. The the little winged pony's popularity within Disney studio lead many to consider him for recurring roles in future Fantasia segments. Unfortunately, those plans were cancelled. Used throughout the film, the multiplane camera was developed by Ub Iwerks to create the illusion of depth in animated films. It was first tested in the 1937 Oscar-winning theatrical short, The Old Mill and then in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Courvoisier Galleries developed their multiplane art setups to showcased the 3D effect achieved by this revolutionary camera. This is a very rare multiplane setup of the playful little Pegasus who measures approximately 2.5" x 2.5". These delicate setups are made of hand-painted images on thin sheets of glass separated by cardboard spacers within the frame. The painstaking process meant few were ever made and their inherent fragility suggests even fewer exist today. Most multiplane scenes sold featured characters from Bambi and the Silly Symphony Wynken, Blynken, and Nod making this Fantasia piece particularly prized by collectors. The art is in its original 8.5" x 8" glass-front frame with Courvoisier label on back which indicates that this piece is #14 in the series. Condition is Very Good. Frame is sold as-is.
