Description

Olive Bailey Land of the Lost #8 Cover Original Art (EC, 1947). Author Isabel Manning Hewson's Land of the Lost -- an undersea adventure-fantasy for children -- was a network radio sensation that spawned this storybook-style comic series in addition to record albums, a book of illustrated prose, and animated cartoons. Olive Bailey brought a lighthearted style to the proceedings. The comic book series heralded an adventurous direction for the evolving EC Comics line, although Land of the Lost is a far cry from EC's eventual (1950s) identification with crime-and-horror stories. Pictured here with the juvenile leading characters is Red Lantern, a magical fish who guides the youngsters to "that wonderful kingdom at the bottom of the sea." (Not to be confused with DC Comics' Green Lantern, although the characters shared a founding publisher in common -- Maxwell C. Gaines.) This next-to-last issue appeared in print around the time of Max Gaines' death. The radio show lost its sponsorship in 1948, but the franchise survived into the 1950s via Paramount Pictures' Noveltoons series, and in phonograph records. Ink and white watercolor over blue pencil on Bristol board, with an image area of 13.5" x 19". Excellent condition.
From the Roger Hill Collection.

More Information: This Land of the Lost is not related to the like-titled dinosaur-adventure teleseries of the 1970s.
