Description

Drew Friedman Screw Magazine #552 Complete Horizontal Story "Nightwang II" Original Art (Goldstein Publ., 1979). The Friedman Bros., writer Josh Alan and artist Drew, proved a formidable team in the Underground Comix resurgence of the 1970s-80s. Their skewed view of the popular culture graced many a page of Al Goldstein's censor-defiant Screw magazine before the brothers began reaching a broadening readership via Fantagraphics Books and the major imprints of Publishers' Row. This parody-advertisement for an imaginary horror movie originated as a component of a suite of images called "Monster Movie Ads" -- left out of the subsequent Friedman Bros. books. Josh's economical, right-to-the-point text forms a design component, perfectly integrated with Drew's photorealistic miniature portraits of Old Hollywood character actors Lincoln "Stepin Fetchit" Perry and prissy Franklin Pangborn, along with Merv Griffin, Rex Reed, and Paul Lynde. A less recognizable face at left might represent Wayne Newton. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Dimensions, 9.5" x 5.25". Excellent condition.
