Description

John Thompson The Book of Dreams "LEO" Lion-Headed Dakini Illustration Original Art (Walter Bachner, 1977). Influenced by the detail-conscious pulp-fiction artistry of Virgil Finlay, Thompson brought a classically attuned and mystical sensibility to the Underground Comix scene. This splendidly filigreed, pointillistic pen drawing achieves on plain paper what Finlay would have done in clay-coated, textured scratchboard. In tantric Buddhist arts, a dakini is a fierce goddess, capable of imparting cosmic wisdom. Thompson's vision imagines an electric guitar in place of the dakini's traditional chopping weapon. The composition includes an element of erotic nudity. Dated "1974" in the bottom right image area and a handwritten page-number reference (reverse). Ink over graphite on watercolor stock. Dimensions, 11.25" square. Moderate toning. Light staining at corners. Excellent condition.
