Description

National Coin Player Piano Group of 4 (c. 1910s-20s). This is a lot of FOUR National Coin player pianos that were made in the early 20th century. The early models (late 1910s and early 1920s) were labeled "National Automatic Music Company." (Subsequent pianos from the mid-to-late 1920s were labeled "National Piano Manufacturing Company.") National Coin pianos were distributed primarily in California and are rarely found in any other region, and because they were larger than the smaller keyboard-style instruments, these pianos waned in overall popularity. NOTE: These pianos were built in VERY MODEST numbers and are exceedingly rare today. These instruments were built without a keyboard and thus could not be played manually. They had eight separate music rolls in a "Ferris wheel" arrangement. This allowed patrons the then-novel option of choosing what song they wanted to hear, rather than having to listen to the next song that came available on a multiple song roll. This machine was like an early juke box, with its selection option! These machines were designed to make money for their owners, with the words "MUSIC CHANGED WEEKLY" etched into the original glass. Some had eight coin slots, each activating a specific roll, allowing the patron to choose the song they wanted to hear. Three of these machines were made with quarter-sawn oak wood. One is made from Honduran mahogany, which was rarely used in coin pianos, indicating it may be a very early model. These pianos are rarely found on the market today. Modification to these machines have been made over the years; they are all sold "as is" with no warranty or implied working condition, with restoration required. A chance to own not just one but four of these difficult-to-find pianos? Incredible! Fair condition.
