C. C. Beck Unpublished Weird Tales Illustration Original Art (ca. 1920s). A rare and fascinating example of Beck's pre-comics pulp work, created to accompany Donald Wandrei's poem "Marmora", which appeared in the May 1930 issue of Weird Tales without the image. Beck and Wandrei were classmates at the University of Minnesota, and it is possible the piece was published alongside the poem in a small press or student publication in the late 1920s before it was submitted to Weird Tales. Ink and gouache on illustration board with an image area of 8" x 12.5", matted and framed with glass to an overall size of 17.5" x 22.25". Signed by Beck in the lower right. Stress lines with color loss on the lower right and top edges, and some crackling of the ink on the top left corner and lower left under the seated monster. The mat and the text paste-up affixed to it are toning, and the frame has wear and minor chips to bottom corners; otherwise, in Excellent condition.
