Description

Joe Orlando Weird Science #10 Story Page 1 Original Art (EC, 1951). Orlando captures the urgency of a deep-space expedition in this dizzying view from the exterior of an orbiting craft. The story depicted is "The Planetoid!" -- a classic example of publisher Bill Gaines' aim of developing science-fiction comics in a class with the statelier realm of prose-SF magazines. The finished script is by editor Al Feldstein. Feldstein captures an essence of an alternate term for SF, "speculative fiction," with this opening statement: "This is what probably happened." Orlando, in turn, assumes a robust and virile outlook toward space travel, grounding his characters with the confident adventurousness necessary to escape the tug of gravity. Orlando's evolving style, here, still reflects the influence of an early mentor, EC mainstay Wally Wood, while possessing distinctive touches of facial design and perspective. Ink and white paint over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 13" x 18". Toned, with minor spot-staining, and in Excellent condition.
From the Roger Hill Collection.
