Description

James Jean Fables #31 Cover Preliminaries and Print Original Art Group of 3 (DC/Vertigo, 2005). Fables captured the joy and wonder of fairy tales while perfectly juxtaposing them with the brutal realities of the modern world, resulting in characters who felt deeply human rather than cartoonish or caricatured. While this grounded approach helped make the series an instant hit, it also meant that these once-perpetually joyful characters had to endure real-world heartbreak. James Jean masterfully conveyed such a moment on the cover of Issue #31, depicting an intense embrace between the unlikely couple Snow White and Bigby Wolf. The image is framed by cherubic figures, likely representing a few of their seven infant children, and set against a backdrop of vibrant autumn leaves. This lot includes two graphite preliminaries by Jean for this very cover, along with a color print of the finished artwork. The preliminaries are drawn on 8" x 11" sheets folded in half, creating image areas of 5.5" x 8.5". The print measures 9" x 13". All three pieces are signed by the artist. One of the prelims (without the title) features bonus interior sketches. The titled prelim shows minor staining/water damage on the back folded half, which does not affect the artwork. Minor handling wear present; all pieces are in Excellent condition.
