Description

Joe Shuster Superman and Albert Zugsmith Unique and Inscribed Original Art (1940s). Two titanic figures in the popular culture -- Superman and lawyer-turned-moviemaker Albert Zugsmith -- figure in this ironically hopeful tribute piece from Shuster, the founding artist of the lucrative Superman franchise. The irony is that Zugsmith, as a practicing attorney, had promised Shuster and original writer Jerry Siegel that he would sue DC Comics to reclaim for them the rights to Superman, a commodity that they had sold in 1938 for what in retrospect was a very cheap price indeed. Zugsmith muffed the case in 1948, leaving Siegel and Shuster essentially exiled from a superhero industry that they had helped to invent. The image here of a beaming Superman, hailing "Zuggy" as a "really super" guy, takes on an embittered resonance in retrospect. Zugsmith abandoned the practice of law and retrenched in Hollywood, where he became a producer responsible for such essential motion pictures as Orson Welles' Touch of Evil (1958), Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) -- and such box-office sleaze-hits as High School Confidential and Sex Kittens Go to College (1958-1960). The present selection bears a personalized inscription, followed by the signatures of Siegel and Shuster. Graphite and faded red pencil on age-toned Bristol board. Dimensions, 13.75" x 11", matted out to 16.25" x 19.25". Very Good condition, with light handling wear and a vertical crease at left margin.
