Description
Floyd Gottfredson (as Walt Disney) Mickey Mouse Daily Comic Strip Original Art Dated 7-28-47 (Disney/King Features Syndicate, 1947). A modernized Mickey Mouse sports postwar-fashion high-waist pants and a snazzy broad-brimmed hat, but he cannot get hep to the bebop jazz music of the day. Fancying himself capable of writing a song better than what he hears over the radio, Mickey tries his hand at composing. His effort afflicts him with a lyrical nonsense earworm that will not allow him to sleep (this, long before the trendy term earworm was coined). At once progressive and reactionary, Gottfredson's gag achieves hilarity with an undercurrent of anger. Though denied a byline under work-for-hire conditions, Gottfredson developed a distinctive, edgy vision of Mickey unlike anything Walt Disney could have imagined. Ink over graphite on Strathmore Bristol board, with an image area of 17.75" x 5.25". In Very Good condition, with light overall toning, darker edge and spot markings, a pronounced spot-stain atop Panel 3, blade-scoring on the ears, and light smudging and warping.Auction Info
