Barry Smith and Dan Adkins Conan the Barbarian #23 Splash Page 1 Original Art (Marvel, 1973). This powerful splash page opens "The Shadow of the Vulture", adapted from Robert E. Howard's short story, in the landmark issue that introduced Red Sonja into Conan comics continuity. It's a show-stopping piece, with the Cimmerian barbarian storming up the steps of the Palace Royal, dragging and carrying guards who dared block his path, a grand show of strength set against the elaborately detailed city of Pah-Dishah below. By this point in the run, Barry Windsor-Smith's pencils and layouts had grown increasingly confident and mature, with his distinctive ornate style making him as one of comics' breakout stars. Fans recognized it immediately, watching his artistry and reputation rise in tandem that resulted in a stout collector's market for his art. This is also one of the very few original Windsor-Smith pages from the issue to survive as many were lost in transit, forcing Roy Thomas to scramble a team of artists to ink vellum overlays from photocopies of Windsor-Smith's originals. Note that while three inkers are credited at the top of the page, they worked on different pages of the issue, and we believe Adkins was the sole inker of the page offered here. A rare survivor from a key turning point in Conan's comic legacy and Windsor-Smith's ascent as a superstar, created in ink over blue pencil and graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 10" x 15", including header and indicia paste-ups. Toning, whiteout corrections, smudging, blue pencil editorial notes/marks, adhesive residue staining, tape over stat indicia, page number, and header paste-ups, missing credits paste-up, and handling wear.
