Description
Doc Savage #1 March 1933 (Street & Smith) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Cream to off-white pages. The man, the myth, Doc Savage makes his first appearance in this legendary pulp key! Lester Dent, a master of evocative prose, introduces our hero in "The Man of Bronze," complete with a striking cover by Walter Baumhofer inviting readers to meet a man who seems every bit as daring as he is enigmatic. Doc used his genius wits, brawn, guts, and every tool at his disposal in the pursuit of justice and punishing evildoers, so it's no wonder this heroic polymath has been cited as the forerunner of modern superheroes. The Man of Bronze perhaps most notably influenced the creation of the Man of Steel, with Siegel and Shuster borrowing not only Doc's "Fortress of Solitude" but also his first name --Clark!the most recent sale of this issue saw a VG+ copy sell for $33,000, owed in no small part to the fact that few of the surviving copies of this issue are free of restoration, and only 11 have been certified by CGC to date. With a reach of influence that expands from books, to movies such as the Indiana Jones series, to modern day video games like Uncharted, this issue would be the shining gem of any collection.
Bookery's notes as "uncommon to scarce". Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition 2020 GD 2.0 value = $1000; VG 4.0 value = $10,000. CGC census 10/25: 1 in 3.0, 6 higher.
