Description

Basil Wolverton The Moon Tryout Comic Strips #18 and 19 Original Art (1938). Wolverton's documentary-style depiction of the gravitational tensions between Planet Earth and its Moon originated with an early project that went unpublished, anticipating or foreshadowing Wolverton's more science-fictionally attuned comics of the 1940s. The three-panel narrative displays a serious and speculative side of an artist better known for his grotesque portraits and slapstick humor, and proves Wolverton capable of creating realistic, science-based illustrations with an epic-scale sensibility. This was reprinted in Creeping Death From Neptune -- The Life and Comics of Basil Wolverton Vol.1. The art is in ink over light graphite on Bristol board, surmounted upon a backing sheet. The image area, including Wolverton's lettering, measures 12" x 14", with a horizontal crease between tiers. Excellent condition, with mild age-toning.
