Description

George Herriman Krazy Kat Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-1-1944 (King Features Syndicate, 1944). Herriman lived and died by the fortunes of Krazy Kat, a unique exercise in bizarre absurdity that defined the career of the great Creole cartoonist -- even though Herriman had other, more nearly conventional, features in his portfolio at the mass-market syndicate of King Features. This late-in-life example finds Herriman at a peak of bizarre wordplay, which pits literal-minded Ignatz Mouse against Krazy Kat's imaginative perceptions. For a change, Ignatz is allowed to leave Krazy Kat nonplussed by getting in the last word (rather than Ignatz' customary brick-throwing tantrum). Published posthumously -- the artist died on April 25, 1944 -- this example demonstrates Herriman's industrious habit of beating the deadlines by a stretch. The strip had run its course by June 25, 1944. Syndicate boss W.R. Hearst would honor Herriman's legacy by refusing to allow a continuation by lesser talents. Many editors had complained about the strangeness of Krazy Kat. Hearst, ostensibly the most tyrannical of publishers, had loved the strip and encouraged Herriman to keep it weird. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 14.25" x 4.25". Light/moderate toning, and in Excellent condition.
