Description

George Herriman Krazy Kat Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-18-1943 (King Features Syndicate, c. 1943). Popeye the Sailor has the occasional retinue of "ghosks," or ghosts, to annoy and distract him. His contemporary Krazy Kat has a "goats," or ghost, to reckon with. At least, Krazy reckons that "I bet it's a 'goats,' tryin; to scare somebodda." So the Kat gives out with a ghostly moan -- startling the 'goats' into a hasty exit. This late-in-life example (undated as to year, likely from 1943) displays the broader pen-line and heavier lettering style that characterized the winding-down years of Krazy Kat, the weirdest and most poetically dreamlike feature in comics. The story is hilarious for inexplicable reasons: Herriman, just being Herriman, is funnier than most cartoonists when trying to be funny. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 16.5" x 5".
