Description
Jack Kirby Lord of Light/Argo "Brahma's Supremacy" Illustration Original Art (1978). This incredible Jack Kirby illustration has a very interesting story connected with it. Originally conceived as production pieces for a proposed film, based on a Roger Zelazny science fiction novel, the commissioned art was stored away when producer Barry Geller lost his funding. It was later picked up by the CIA for use in a daring covert rescue mission of six Americans held in Iran. A fake film production company was created, with offices set up in Hollywood, and permission to film scenes in Iran was obtained, all as a ruse to spirit the Americans out. The Ben Affleck film, Argo, is based on these true events, and this piece of art played a pivotal role in that astounding and successful mission.Note that "Brahma's Supremacy" is one of the few "Lord of Light" pieces that wasn't sold in the June 1993 Sotheby's auction. Mr. Geller kindly filled us in on this particular piece: "When I first met Jerry Weist of Sotheby's at Jack and Roz [Kirby's] 50th wedding anniversary I committed to bringing the Lord Of Light/Science Fiction Land drawings for a review of value to be put up for Sotheby's major auction of the coming year. Some time later Jerry informed me he considered "Brahma's Supremacy" to be the most valuable of the entire lot -- which really surprised me... This particular drawing [was] totally unlike anything [else] he did for me. [It] is the epitome of Jack's personal imagination, beyond what the production values I was attempting to maintain. Just totally hallucinatory, visionary, and impossible to make architecturally. When I approached Jack and Roz for their blessing to sell all the drawings, to pay for my son's first year of college, I gave them this drawing as my sign of great respect... Although I owned the drawing and could have done what I wanted, I still asked Jack and Roz's blessing... I just loved this man, on so many dimensions, what can I say."
The piece is drawn in ink on paper, with an approximate image area of 22" x 17.5", matted to an overall size of 29" x 24". The art is in Excellent condition, and even without the fascinating story behind it, this is classic "King" Kirby as you love him.
With the Argo movie winning awards, there's bound to be some serious interest from Hollywood collectors as well as the comics crowd, so be prepared to bid enthusiastically.
