Dave Cockrum and Neal Adams Batman #246 Cover Original Art (DC, 1972). This is the first time Heritage has offered a Batman piece by this art team! It's the only Batman cover the two did together, and it's a ghastly one at that! This chilling scene shows Batman on edge as someone toys with various Robin dummies and ways to "kill" the Boy Wonder.Dave Cockrum was one of the foremost names in the comic industry of this era -- or any era. Whether you know his work from his run on DC's Legion of Super-Heroes, or from his run on Marvel's X-Men, Dave Cockrum built up a loyal fan-following throughout his career which also included a handful of Batman work from 1972 through 1988.
The late Neal Adams added his definitive ink over Cockrum's pencils here, which only elevates an already tense piece with dramatic dynamism. Adams had been drawing Batman for about four or five years when this cover was published but would eventually make the Dark Knight one of his signature comic characters proving that Batman worked best as a character grounded in realism over high fantasy stories.
Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Moderate toning, marginal pinholes and adhesive residue, corner bends and edge wear, spots of whiteout, and production notes. There are paper lifts and scuffs in the margins, adhesive residue in the image, the page is warped from possible water damage with some staining. The top Batman logo and issue dressing in upper left and Batman's text are stat paste-ups. The bottom right tomb shaped text is a stat-paste up that is coming loose. Signed by Cockrum in lower right and in Good condition.
