Description

Frank Frazetta Tarzan and the Castaways "Champion" Interior Illustration Original Art (Canaveral Press, 1965). Few artists have captured the raw physicality and primal intensity of Tarzan like Frank Frazetta. Building on the foundations laid by Hal Foster and Burne Hogarth, Frazetta reimagined the character with sharper musculature, a darker mood, and a more animalistic edge -- a fitting evolution for the Lord of the Jungle!
Although not a graphic novel, this project includes four Frazetta illustrations created for a previously unpublished Tarzan story by Edgar Rice Burroughs. In this tale, Tarzan is stranded on a remote island alongside a cast of dangerous characters, including a ragtag group of brutal mutineers. One of them receives a particularly memorable introduction to Tarzan's right hand, captured in this dynamic image and described in the book's caption as: "The ape-man dealt him a terrific blow on the side of the head with his open palm." That same quote is handwritten next to a small, very rough preliminary layout on the reverse of the board.
Printed on Page 24 of the book and titled "Champion," this piece, along with Frazetta's other mid-1960s illustrations for Canaveral Press' Tarzan and Pellucidar volumes, marks a key transitional moment in the artist's career. It reflects the shift from his early comic book roots toward the bold, mythic style that would define his fantasy masterworks.
Ink and white paint over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 8.5" x 10.5". Light toning and minor handling wear. Signed by Frazetta at the lower right. In Excellent condition.
