Description
SpongeBob SquarePants "The Paper" Squidward Production Cel Setup with "I Was a Teenage Gary" Master Background (Nickelodeon, 1999/2000). "Are you sure?" Squidward answers the call in this exasperated original setup featuring a production cel from Episode 16's "The Paper" paired with a Master background from Episode 13's "I Was a Teenage Gary" of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants. One of the last Nicktoons to premiere in the 1990s (and the only one of the decade still airing with a total of 15 seasons and counting), only Season 1 of this iconic series was produced with traditional cel animation. "The Paper" debuted on February 14, 2000 with SpongeBob ecstatically turning Squidward's discarded gum wrapper into an imaginative array of entertainment, while "I Was a Teenage Gary" aired just before the previous Halloween on October 28, 1999 with Squidward charged enlisted to care for Gary while SpongeBob takes a weekend away. When their respective segments are viewed online, Squidward can be spotted answering his shellphone near the 1:13 timestamp irritated to hear SpongeBob on the other end while his window is seen near the 9:40 timestamp as snail-transformed SpongeBob peeks though the open curtains. Featured large and centered, Squidward has a hand-painted three-quarters figure measuring 3.75" x 5.75" on the 12 field cel which is numbered in the lower right. The Master background is composed of a hand-painted gouache background board measuring approximately 13.25" x 10.25" overall paired with a hand-painted 12 field cel layer for the curtains; both bear production codes along their lower edges. Background artists for Episode 13 include Peter Bennett, Michael Chen, Andy 'Spike' Clark, Calvin G. Liang, and Richard Ziehler-Martin. With typical handling and edge wear including minor linework wear with evidence of restoration and faint surface wear/debris, overall this unexpected call is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
