Description
"Bullwinkle's Corner for Bonds" One-Page Public Service Comic Preliminary Original Art (Jay Ward/Boy Scouts of America, 1962). "What is green, valuable, and reaches maturity in seven and three-quarter years?" "A rich teen-age grasshopper?" No Bullwinkle, it's a US Savings Bond, in this superb rarity from Jay Ward color stylist Sam Clayberger (1926 - 2018). In 1962, Jay Ward wanted to draw attention to The Bullwinkle Show by arranging to host a US Savings Bond campaign and included was a comic page Public Service ad published in Boy's Life V52#10, dated October 1962. This preliminary page of art, drawn in blue and red pencil with some graphite, is on a sheet of onionskin paper measuring approximately 18.75" x 23.5" with an image area of 14.75" x 18.75". Bullwinkle is joined by Rocky (who asked the question quoted above), Boris, Dudley Do-Right (who shows his Canadian pride, even when admitting to buying US Savings Bonds), Inspector Fenwick, and Nell. The page was stored folded, so there are fold creases and fold corner separations in the middle. Condition is Good with some handling and edge wear and tears, plus age-related paper toning.From the Archive of Sam Clayberger and Michael Kadin.
