PLATINUM

Jean Giraud (Moebius) Le Bandard Fou Story Page 12 Original Art (Les Editions du Fromage, 1975).

A pivotal early Moebius page from the album that announced his fully formed, "second-skin" style to the world. Drawn for Le Bandard Fou, the first full-length graphic novel by Moebius.

This page captures the book's heady mix of satirical sci-fi and delirious slapstick-- executed in hatch-rich, black-and-white linework that became a signature of his 1970s breakthrough.

In Panel 2, take note of the playful nod to Uderzo's Asterix & Obelix -- where every fateful run-in with the hapless pirates inevitably ends with their ship at the bottom of the sea. A subtle wink as well to Géricault's Raft of the Medusa, seamlessly blending comic mischief with high art.

Le Bandard Fou stands at the hinge of his career: the year he co-founded Les Humanoïdes Associés/Métal Hurlant, paving the way for Arzach and the universe of The Airtight Garage -- a cosmos many critics trace back to ideas and characters seeded in Le Bandard Fou.

Few works better represent the moment Moebius liberated European comics into adult, visionary territory.
