Frank Miller's uncompromising 1980s epic, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, stands as a landmark contribution to the then-nascent graphic novel movement. Batman is featured prominently in this stunning illustration, striking the same dynamic, airborne pose as seen on Frank Miller's iconic cover for The Dark Knight Returns, published in 1986 -- the very artwork that sold for $2.4 million at Heritage Auctions in June 2022.
This gorgeous illustration was initially published as the inside front cover of the 1996 trade paperback edition of The Dark Knight Returns (reissued to coincide with the 10th anniversary), then again in 2015 in Batman Noir: The Dark Knight Returns, the breathtaking black-and-white edition of the story, where it served as the frontispiece for the second chapter, "The Dark Knight Triumphant". It was also reprinted in the same placement, among other editions, in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - 30th Anniversary Edition (2016) and The Dark Knight Saga Deluxe Edition (2017).
Ink and white paint over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 16.5" x 21" (and matted to the same size). Signed with initials in the lower right corner. DC stamp on the back, dated 1997. In Excellent condition.
